How effective are ManukaMed’s products?

ManukaMed medical grade Manuka honey wound care dressings are highly effective in closing difficult and chronic wounds and healing wounds in less time. In most cases, you see the effect of our manuka honey at the first dressing change. In moderate to highly exudative wounds, our HD line shows immediate effects of managing exudate and maintaining a moist wound environment. Is ManukaMed covered by public and private insurance?

ManukaMed wound care dressings are covered by most insurances.
Manuka HD Superlite 2x2”, 4x5” and rope and MedSaf 4x5” dressings all have Medicare Part B coverage for daily use. This means national 3rd party billers use these options as part of their recommendations to wound centers.

What types of wounds do ManukaMed products perform best?  What are the indications?

ManukaMed wound care sterile single-use dressings are indicated for leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, 1st and 2nd degree burns (superficial and partial thickness), diabetic foot ulcers, surgical wounds, traumatic wounds, skin tears, and skin grafts including the donor site.

ManukaDerm is most effective for chapped or cracked skin, dry, itchy skin, eczema, sunburns, and minor burns.

ManukaBalm is most effective for relief of dry, chapped or cracked lips.

ManukaPli is a sterile honey wound dressing that helps maintain a moist wound environment. ManukaPli is 100% Manuka honey and indications for use include: Leg Ulcers, Pressure Ulcers, 1st and 2nd Degree Burns (superficial and partial thickness), Diabetic Foot Ulcers, Surgical Wounds, Trauma Wounds, Minor Abrasions, Lacerations, Minor Cuts, Minor Scalds and Burns.

At what stage should I consider using ManukaMed for wound care?

ManukaMed medical grade honey wound dressings should be applied at the commencement of wound treatment through to closure completion. For most chronic wounds this means after surgical debridement at day 1 of the post sharp debridement process. Manuka Honey is exceptional as maintenance debridement and works by inhibiting plasmin activator inhibitor (PAI) allowing more natural plasmin into the wound bed. Patients gain the special bioactive properties of Manuka Honey including the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial protection effects throughout their treatment.

 

Are ManukaMed products USFDA approved?  Is it being used in the US?

ManukaMed wound care products are all US FDA cleared as sterile single-use 510(k) medical devices. ManukaMed employs other internal quality standards to ensure the highest and most consistent medical grade honey is delivered into every dressing.

What is the average duration before dressing change is required with ManukaMed products?

During the first week of use the dressings should be changed every 1 to 3 days, then as needed. Nurses can assess when the dressing is fully absorbed and would change at this time. MedSaf and HD Superlite should be changed daily.

 

There are several products made with Manuka honey? Is ManukaMed different?

Manuka honey (Leptospermum scoparium) from ManukaMed is a very high potency medical grade honey. It comes from a monofloral source for consistency and is superior to other medical grade honeys as measured by the methylglyoxal concentration and anti-bacterial activity. ManukaMed produces its own honey, owns over 30,000 bee hives in Manuka forest in New Zealand, and has proprietary processes and quality controls to produce its medical grade honey and wound dressings. ManukaMed is ISO certified for medical devices.

 

Which ingredients are used to make ManukaMed products?

ManukaMed products are made with 100% manuka honey (Leptospermum scoparium), which is a very high potency medical grade honey. Our Manuka honey is monoflorally sourced for consistency and is superior to other medical grade honeys as measured by the methylglyoxal concentration and anti-bacterial activity. Other ingredients for our salve product line may include natural soothing agents such as Kukui oil and Shea butter.

 

How does ManukaMed perform compared to silver dressings?

ManukaMed Leptospermum scoparium honey wound dressings are superior in anti-bacterial activity to other honey wound dressings and versus silver gel in vitro. ManukaMed honey dressings also have no known resistance to any pathogen and manuka honey is not cytotoxic as some silver dressing are. Because Manuka Honey is not ionic it can be used in and with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. 

 

How easy are ManukaMed products to use?

ManukaMed wound care dressings are very simple and easy to apply and change. See our 8 Easy Steps.  Nursing teams have reported in burn and wound centers as well as home care environments the dressings are very easy to change. The dressings have the structural integrity to be durable yet the dressings are highly flexible and conformable to the surface area of the wound area.

 

Do ManukaMed products help with odor?

ManukaMed Leptospermum scoparium honey wound dressings have a high sugar content which reduces wound bed odor.

 

Is ManukaMed located in the US?  

ManukaMed USA is a wholly owned subsidiary of ManukaMed Inc. of New Zealand. The US headquarters is located in Franklin, Tennessee, and the warehouse/distribution center is in Kansas City, MO.

 

Is ManukaMed safe for animals?  

Yes! ManukaMed products are always 100% manuka honey with no chance of contamination and go through a rigorous proprietary quality control process (called Quality Bioactive Testing), which strictly controls all production aspects of ManukaMed honey, ensuring the most pure, stable, and consistently potent product.

 

Is the ManukaBalm safe to use on persons wearing oxygen?

Our lip balm product, ManukaBalm, contains 70% of our pure Manuka Honey. The content of petrolatum is minimal. While there should be no concerns around putting our balm on the lips of patients wearing an oxygen mask, we provide precautions and contraindications that are worth noting based on the regulatory requirements. Though because Manuka honey is not ionic, it can be used in and with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

When will ManukaDerm be back in stock?

ManukaMed is in the process of manufacturing new batches of ManukaDerm. We are therefore out of stock of this popular skin protectant cream formulation and we apologize for an inconvenience. Our recommended ManukaMed substitute for any skin applications is the ManukaPli. While the ManukaPli will not function as well as a barrier cream, it will still provide the potent bioactive properties to aid with a wide range of skin conditions.
 

Which ManukaMed products, if any, are covered by Medicare?

ManukaMed has confirmed our patent protected dressings containing the substrate super absorbent fiber w manuka honey is being approved for the entire HD Superlite line (2x2’, 4x5” rope and wrap sizes) as well as MedSaf (4x5” and wrap) sizes.

We are pleased to see patients with large area surface wounds such as those with circumferential venous leg ulcers can now receive HD SL wrap or MedSaf wrap dressing to help control the moderate to heavy levels of exudate these chronic wounds often present with. The coding allows for up to 30 dressings per wound per month so they can be changed daily as may be required.

We are also thankful to have so many 3rd party billing partners now on board with ManukaMed and this means having access to them through your wound center can allow you to receive your dressings direct to your home. If you have Medicare Part B and supplemental Part B coverage this would mean a $0 co-pay and that you would get these dressing for free.
